About the Item

I am very happy to present, to make known and to make you appreciate directly this important couple of oil paintings on canvas "Scenes of Roman history", 105 x 130 cm without frame and 125 x 155 cm with an incredible carved and gilt frame of the seventeenth century, both focused on the famous episode of "Ratto delle Sabine", naturally from a single command. In fact, while in the one with Romulus, which I mentioned earlier, the "Rat" is represented right in front of the tent, the other one, I think, refers to the later episode with the Sabines who attacked Rome, to take back their wives. However, after joining the Romans, they worked for peace between the two peoples who later united in Rome to become their epicenter. However, they constitute a new outstanding acquisition in the catalog of Francesco Allegrini (Gubbio 1587 - Rome 1663), especially with regard to the production of paintings for paintings that he has certainly been able to place next to that most famous frescoes in The Roman palaces and his hometown, where he benefited from the protection and patronage of Bishop Alessandro Sperelli, who commissioned the chapel of the sacrament in the cathedral. Allegrini's activity as a fresco and decorator of Roman palaces - the fresco of San Marco in Rome and the cycles of Palazzi Colonna, Costaguti and Doria Pamphilj - was correctly delineated by E. Fumagalli and AG De Marchi distinguishing it from that of the Flemish artist Vincent Adriaenssen, known as "Hub of Antwerp" recently unearthed and on which Professor Sestieri also made an additional contribution (Studies on the Roman Baroque Written in honor of Maurizio Fagiolo dell'Arco, Skira 2004, pp. 219-229). However, given his public works - those of Gubbio and Genoa were not mentioned - it may be surprising how difficult it is to reconstruct a corpus of congruent paintings on canvas in classical classics, such as the relevant pair discussed here, for which they have certainly not missed opportunities for a successful painter like Allegrini. But in this respect it should be noted, in my opinion, that this task, besides a certain congenital disinterest for contemporary criticism, has been intrinsically hindered by the dichotomous character of its personality, which first evolved under the domination of Caesars to open. then a decisive accession to the Baroque, without completely avoiding the Mannerist inflections, particularly cultivated in his most fervent graphic activity and clearly appeared in his "beautiful scenes", confirms an essential part of his work, illustrated by the aforementioned cycles to her hand. The stylistic and figurative correspondences between the versions of the Sabine rats and the typical works of art of the Allegrini, with characters posed in the same way and with a baroque emphasis, explain in any case the interpretative and expositive differences for a total adhesion. in the baroque, but already underpinned by classical attenuations of giving more weight to the human figure, with the emerging central group, very dense and with the presentation of the characters, while leaving enough room in the upper half, in a Wall depicting with diagonal square towers and a landscape background on the right side, and on the other side, the tent represents a more 17th century style than the Roman style, as well as the fortified ensemble with powerful circular towers. However, in these two paintings, two absolute masterpieces of the entire curriculum of Allegrini, the painter shows to have fully assimilated the lesson of Berrettini, in which the workshop had moved after the death of the Cavalier Arpino in 1640, in the vast orchestras. masses of characters with a dynamic full of baroque taste, denouncing Mannerist reminiscences in the wake of the Cesari fresco, like the group of knights on the picture with the walls and in which the attention of the author focuses on splendid coppiedi characters of more detailed definition and chrome ranges more vivid than that with the woman in blue dress on the left and the other with the wounded warrior lying on the ground next to his shield on the right. The paintings and works of art published here are my exclusive property and therefore are always available to be viewed, by appointment, in my exhibition sites located in Sanremo and Brescia.
