About the Item

Francesco Annicini (Rome 1632 - post 1679) - Still Life with a Fruit Seller. 73.5 x 98.5 cm unframed, 90 x 115 cm with frame. Ancient oil painting on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame (not signed). - The painting is attributed with certainty to Francesco Annicini (Rome 1632 - post 1679) based on stylistic comparisons. - Reference bibliography: A. Cottino, “Francesco Annicini. The Rediscovery of a Still Life Painter in Baroque Rome,” Etgraphiae, 2024. Condition report: Lined canvas. The painted surface is in good condition, with traces of old restorations and wear. Rome was a center of excellence for still life painting throughout the 17th century, where various artists explored the beauty of everyday objects and experimented with creating detailed, realistic compositions. Influenced by Caravaggism, many painters of the genre adopted a dramatic use of light and color, creating intense contrasts and evocative atmospheres. The objects depicted often had symbolic meanings, such as a skull symbolizing mortality or the vast fruit arrangements signifying abundance and well-being. In this work, attributed to the Baroque painter Francesco Annicini (recently rediscovered and explored in a monograph by Professor Alberto Cottino), we find a fruit vendor's stall. However, the human figure recedes into the background of the composition, leaving room for a cascade of fruit that is the true protagonist of the canvas. We find apples, figs, grapes, and pumpkins depicted with the typical stylistic features of Roman still life, rich in contrasts and highlights. - This item is sold with a certificate of authenticity with legal validity. - Further details on the condition report are available upon request. *Please keep in mind that this work has not yet obtained the certificate of free export from Italy from the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage.
