Exquisite, early original oil on canvas painting of a harlequin by the well known artist, Charles Levier. Titled verso “L’Babit Blanc” or the “The White Robe” and signed verso. Signed lower left on the front of painting as well. Circa 1955. Condition is excellent; recently professionally cleaned. No apparent restorations. Framed in a reproduction of the period wood frame. Overall framed dimensions are 38 by 32 inches. Provenance: A Greenwich Village, New York collector. Charles Levier. 1920-2003 – Artist Charles Levier, aka Maurice Verrier, was born in 1920 of a French father and an American mother in Corsica. He held a fascination with color and form that led him, at age seventeen, to the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs for private studies. World War II broke out and Levier served in the French army in North Africa, later becoming Liaison Officer with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. Coming to America...

Provenance: Steel Gallery, Coral Gables, Florida. Nadine Campbell Hoskins, born in 1912 was a self-taught artist and Coral Gables jet-setter who was a staple of Miami Herald social columns in the 1960s and '70s. She began her career at the Lowe Art Museum's clothesline sales. New artists could hang paintings on clotheslines. Her paintings are in [Lowe's] permanent collection. Nahum Tschacbasov Biography : Russian-American artist Nahum Tschacbasov (1899-1984) is known for his cubo-surrealistic works which feature a strong psychological element. Some of his work bears a resemblance to work of another Russian-American artist--David Burliuk. He was somewhat of a late starter, moving to Paris in 1932 to study under Adolph Gottlieb, Marcel Gromaire and Fernand Leger. He had his first exhibition in Paris in 1934. He then returned to the US where he joined Rothko and Gottlieb at the Galery Seccession. He was one of the co-founders of The Ten, a group of social conscious abstract painters which included Rothko, Gottlieb, Joseph Solman and Ilya Bolotowsky, among others. In 1944, he began to work at Stanley Hayter's Atelier 17, a center for surrealistic ideas. Between 1936 and 1943, he had five one-man exhibitions at the ACA Galleries and participated in five group shows. He also exhibited at the Whitney, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Knox Albright Museum, the Chicago Institute of Fine Art and Corcoran, among others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Met, the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum and the Jewish Museum. Jirayr Hamparzoom Zorthian was born April 14, 1911 in Kutahya, Turkey, of Armenian parents. At the age of three, he showed considerable talent in drawing and painting. Zorthian went through two Turkish massacres before age eight. He left Turkey at age nine with his family and spent a year in Padua, Italy, waiting for his visa to open to the United States. This period was very important in his life because his father took him to many cities in Europe and exposed him to great works of art. Zorthian arrived in the United States at the age of eleven and settled with his family in New Haven, Connecticut. He obtained his formal education there, after graduating from Yale, the Winchester Fellowship granted him a year and a half at the American Academy in Rome with travel and study throughout Europe. His art career branched into various directions on his return to the United States. As a mural painter his reputation was established. He has forty two (42) murals throughout the United States.
