About the Item

"Maria Van Rysselberghe au coin du feu" is a portrait painting by Post-Impressionist Théo van Rysselberghe. The portrait is signed lower right, "Atelier Van Rysselberghe". The framed piece measures 41 1/8 x 42 x 2 in. Théo van Rysselberghe was one of the most prominent Post-Impressionist and a leader of the avant garde artists in Belgium. Van Rysselberghe's early paintings were influenced by the Impressionists but in 1886, it was upon seeing Georges Seurat's monumental 'Sunday Afternoon on the Ile de la Grande Jatte', now at the Art Institute of Chicago, that changed the trajectory of his artistic style. Van Rysselberghe adopted the Pointillist style championed by Seurat and Paul Signac. His greatest contribution to Post-Impressionism was his application to its methodology and tenets to portraits. Today his works are collected by museums across the globe, including the Metropolitant Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris.
