About

Pittoni came from a family of painters and architects. He received lessons from his uncle Francesco Pittoni in Venice and later from Antonio Balestra. In 1716 he became a member of the Venetian painters' guild. Later he was a founding member of the Venetian Academy of Arts (Accademia di Belle Arte de Venezia) and succeeded Giovanni Battista Tiepolo as its president (1759 to 1761). Although he hardly ever left Venice, he accepted commissions from Germany, Austria, Poland and Russia. From 1745 to 1747 he was active in Verona and Bergamo and in 1760 in Cracow. He created some altarpieces for Venetian churches (for example with Sebastiano Ricci and Tiepolo in San Cosmo e Damiano around 1730) and for churches in Vicenza and Brescia. Only a few of his frescoes in private houses have survived (including Scenes from the Life of Diana, Palazzetto Widman in Bagnoli di Sopra near Padua). Giovanni Battista Pittoni was a highly esteemed painter of large-format paintings with mythological, historical and religious subjects. Stylistically his bright, partly academic compositions are influenced by Sebastiano Ricci, Antonio Balestra and Tiepolo. He is considered one of the most important representatives of the Rococo in Venice. The present work refers to a composition by Pittoni, which he realised in a large-format painting in the monastery of Ottobeuren. This painting Sermon of St John the Baptist is worked as a counterpart to Death of St Joseph. Both were worked directly for the abbey, but so far the thematic relationship of the two paintings is unclear. Equally open is the question of whether they formerly formed part of a larger cycle. The paintings were long attributed to Johannes Evangelist Holzer before Hermann Voss described them as works by Pittoni in 1962. Since then, this attribution has not been disputed. The Sermon of John the Baptist is known in several versions. This testifies to a certain popularity of the composition. Compared to the composition in Ottobeuren, the present work shows independence in the implementation of the pictorial idea and a high artistic quality. This suggests that Pittoni's successor further developed his composition. Saint John the Baptist Preaching, 18th Century Old Master, By Pittoni, Figurativ
