British School Birth: 1911 Death: 2005 **20th century master Romantic Marine painter ** The talented 20th century English marine painter Henry Scott emerged from a distinguished family of mariners dating back over 300 years that included the first man to fit a compass within an iron ship. Specializing in ship portraits set within realist atmospheres, Scott offers historic champions of sail in his art. Scott frequently watched the departures of the square-riggers from Falmouth for the annual Tall Ships race. A fine sailor in his youth, he became particularly enamored with clipper ships. During his career, he made the acquaintance of many 19th and 20th century sailing captains. Earning their respect, as well as developing an appreciative commercial art audience, Scott was made an honorary member of the International Association of Master Mariners. Scott served in the Royal Navy on a variety of sailing vessels during World War II. This service allowed him to develop his remarkable ability to record the detail, atmosphere, action, and movement of the ocean. He observed the sea in its varying moods, and used these images in his art. Stylistic comparison is often made to his contemporary Montague Dawson, whose marine paintings are also crisp and highly accurate. In 1970, Scott was commissioned to paint the Morning Cloud winning the Sydney to Hobart race, which was subsequently presented to the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Edward Heath, P.C., M.B.E., M.P. Scott’s work is part of the permanent collection on the Cutty Sark, a famous tea clipper that is now in dry dock on the Thames in London. His work also appears in the collection of the St. Malo Museum in France. Scott exhibited with the Royal Society of Marine Artists from 1950 to 1966. Many of his works, while depicting majestic sailing ships, feature geographically recognizable locations. Comparisons between Scott and his most noted contemporary, Montague Dawson, are easy to make. His excellent detail and accuracy lend to the romantic senses of speed, movement, and light. This skill makes his work rise above that of many others. During his career, Scott was noted as an artist who continued to explore the oceans and visualize the romantic essence of nautical history. Today, Scott’s works are sought after for their strong artistic merit and historical appeal. His paintings are executed with particular care for the creation of a strong sense of movement and attention to the elusive elements of marine atmosphere.
