Murray Urquhart was the son of Dr. Andrew Urquhart, Oakley, Kirkcudbright.  His mother, who died two weeks after Murray’s birth, was the daughter of Alexander McNeel Caird, Procurator Fiscal for Wigtownshire. This is a very unusual subject and market scenes like this are quite rare, I guess due to the complex nature of the subject and the difficulty in balancing the composition.
