He was the student and follower of great Dutch master Frans Hals. Molenaer specialized in genre scenes featuring merry companies, musicians, villagers and soldiers. He was also known for his portrait paintings and religious subjects. Molenaer was born and lived most of his life in Haarlem, where he and his future wife, Judith Leyster, studied in the workshop of Frans Hals. In 1636, after their marriage, the young family moved to Amsterdam. While both Jan and Judith were successful artists, some see Judith as the more talented. She became famous for her genre portraits in which the influence of Frans Hals is especially noticeable. Jan Molenaer borrowed techniques and motifs of "character" portraits of his mentor Frans Hals. However, Molenaer was more likely to use these techniques to portray humor and the artificiality of the “merry company” poses. Presumably, Molenaer ironically depicts the villagers here as naive and simple-minded. He allegorically compares them to the children at play – flying a kite (seen on the left). Furthermore, he sees their efforts to make friends with gypsies as vain, just like the shooting of acorns (on the right) or "casting pearls before swine". Molenaer’s career can be divided into 3 stages. The early stage reveals expected shortcomings of a young artist. One can see problems with anatomy, perspective, forced expressions and inconsistencies in paint application. Molenaer began to refine his techniques during the 1630’s and 1640’s. As he developed his own unique style, he earned his position as one of the important Dutch Master painters. Over the next phases of his career, Molenaer used the style of tonal painting created in Haarlem - light and monochromatic strokes. Using a carefully harmonized tone, Molenaer’s main characters are strengthened by the use of color and light. Unlike Hals, with his sharp, rough brushstroke, Molenaer’s strokes are soft and open and encourage the viewer to look more carefully at his work. The final phase of Molenaer’s career 1648 to 1668, was a period during which he painted scores of compositions of merrymaking peasants and elaborate outdoor feasts. The works of Jan Molenaer can be seen in top museums in cities such as Amsterdam, The Hague, London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Budapest, Vienna, Rotterdam and also in Seattle. Both brothers of Jan Molenaer - Bartholomeus Molenaer (died in 1650 in Haarlem) and Nicolaes Molenaer (died in 1676 in Haarlem) were also artists. Landscape painter Nicolaes Molenaer worked with his older brother Jan and sometimes painted the rural landscapes within Jan’s genre paintings.
