About the Item

This painting is added to the corpus of Jans Frans Van Bloemen by an expertise of professor Giancarlo Sestrieri. The Van Bloemen were a family of painter. Jans, born in Antwerp, probably started learning art with his brother Pieter but then, from 1681 to 1684, he was a pupil of Anton Goubau, a painter of market and bamboccianti scenes. After a while in France, in Paris and Lyon, he moved to Rome in the 1688 and there he remained for all of his life (even if he travelled quite often). Van Bloemen was successful in Rome, he established himself as the leading painter of views of the Roman countryside depicted in the aesthetic of the classical landscape tradition, and he received commissions from prominent patrons such as the Queen of Spain Elizabeth Farnese, the Roman nobility and the Pope. He joined the Bentvueghels, the association of Dutch and Flemish artists in Rome, where he took the nickname Orizzonte or Horizonti. This nickname referred to the distance he painted in his landscapes.
