Mannerism, derived from the Italian term "maneria," which simply means "style," was an artistic movement that emerged in the later years of the Italian High Renaissance, around 1520, and extended into the early 17th century. It is often referred to as the "stylish style" due to its emphasis on self-conscious artifice rather than realistic depiction. Historians debate whether Mannerism should be classified as a style, a movement, or a period. In contrast to the harmonious ideals embraced by renowned artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci, Mannerist painters took a step further and created compositions that were almost bizarre. They introduced fresh color schemes, elongated proportions, and exaggerated anatomy of figures, portraying them in convoluted and serpentine poses. These artists skillfully exhibited their techniques and abilities, aiming to evoke a sense of sophisticated elegance. Jed Jackson was born in Fayette, Arkansas. Throughout his education, he studied under artists such as Janet Fish, Fairfield Porter, and Leland Bell, and reaps influence from the “gritty realism” of artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jacques Louis David, and early Edgar Degas, and the work of his contemporaries including John Currin and David Salle. Jackson is currently the Chairman of the Art Department at University of Memphis in Tennessee and is the author of the book “Art: A Comparative Study.” Jackson’s paintings are modern mythological allegories, rich with subtle innuendos, political dissent, and emotional ambiguity. Gleaning inspiration from fashion magazines, movies, the literary world, and a plethora of other twentieth century cultural sources, Jackson incorporates these images and ideas with a keen sense of color to create paintings that are simultaneously rich in content and aesthetically dynamic.
