Figurative Art / Pop and Contemporary Pop / Oil Painting John Paul Fauves (b.1980) is a Costa Rican artist. His art formation starts from a young age, having an art tutor when his parents noticed his affinity for art. As he grew up he became a student under Joaquin Rodriguez del Paso, one of the most important modern art teachers in Costa Rica. Fauves studied under him for more than 15 years. Worldly-minded, Fauves decided to start promoting his art online through social media and the web, which was a turning point for him. The result was almost immediate and just a year later, he began having art shows all over the world alongside important media impact through articles in Forbes and Vogue. “A Loss of Innocence” is a body of work which powerfully transports Fauves’ feelings about the latter-day human condition and the persisting exposure to desires. In his work, Fauves creates with his brush strokes his perspective on how sometimes these temptations can evolve into a hedonistic lifestyle, where the search for pleasure is the only road with no regards to consequences. In this series, Fauves uses modern icons and recreates portraits of famous young people who paid with their lives the “loss of innocence”, the body of work presenting the molding of the self to fit into society as people age. Even though they begin their lives oblivious to societal pressures, they consequently start to hide behind their ego, creating a mask instead of embracing the truest version of themselves. Within the artistic process of appropriating Disney characters, Fauves makes use of childhood icons to express his notion, subsequently corrupts them, and destroys the principal of recognized innocence, thus conveying the idea of the childhood naivety lost upon developing the ego, the being consumed by a life pleasure-seeking distractions, void of any soul, covered by the mask. Fauves considers his style to be Neo Pop Fauvism, a term new to our time. The use of color with lots of texture and his deconstructive ideas of art create harmony amongst the chaos. In reference to his methods, Fauves says that “Once I have an idea or vision of what I want to create, I usually sketch it first and bring to life what is in my head. Then I bring this to a big format on canvas and use acrylic paint, mostly with spray paint, Chinese ink and most recently resin.” Fauves’ upcoming current work concept of a “NoProfile”, refers to the process in which people begin place all of their worth into commercial pursuit, sacrificing their inner selves, almost devoid of a soul, becoming a shell in a world of materialism. Ultimately, Fauves aims to hold a mirror to the viewer, making them realize that this life is not merely a physical experience, but rather a spiritual journey in the form of self-discovery. Escazú Project aims to capture the challenging nature of Fauves’ work, hoping to highlight his mission in provoking self-reflection on the viewers’ own lives and our society, by means of his intricate and rule-breaking pieces. Fauves has exhibited in the Krause Gallery, NYC, Imitate London, ARCO Madrid, Art Palm Beach, Miami, Art Basel Miami, Laurent & Martin Gallery, LA Style Fashion week, HOMME gallery, Guy Hepner, NYC, Meir Art Gallery, Belgium, Shanghai Art Fair, and at Paris Design Week. Su formación artística comienza desde muy joven, con un tutor de arte cuando sus padres notaron su afinidad por el arte. A medida que crecía, se convirtió en alumno de Joaquín Rodríguez del Paso, uno de los maestros de arte moderno más importantes de Costa Rica. Fauves estudió con él por más de 15 años. De mentalidad mundana, Fauves decidió comenzar a promocionar su arte en línea a través de las redes sociales y la web, lo que fue un punto de inflexión para él. El resultado fue casi inmediato y, apenas un año después, comenzó a tener exposiciones de arte en todo el mundo junto con importantes repercusiones mediáticas a través de artículos en Forbes y Vogue. "A Loss of Innocence" es un cuerpo de trabajo que transporta con fuerza los sentimientos de Fauves sobre la condición humana de los últimos días y la persistente exposición a los deseos. En su trabajo, Fauves crea con sus pinceladas su perspectiva de cómo a veces estas tentaciones pueden evolucionar hacia un estilo de vida hedonista, donde la búsqueda del placer es el único camino sin tener en cuenta las consecuencias. En esta serie, Fauves utiliza iconos modernos y recrea retratos de jóvenes famosos que pagaron con sus vidas la "pérdida de la inocencia", el cuerpo de trabajo que presenta el moldeado del “ser” para encajar en la sociedad a medida que la gente envejece. A pesar de que comienzan sus vidas ajenos a las presiones sociales, en consecuencia comienzan a esconderse detrás de su ego, creando una máscara en lugar de abrazar la versión más verdadera de sí mismos. Dentro del proceso artístico de apropiación de los personajes de Disney, Fauves hace uso de iconos infantiles para expresar su noción, los corrompe y destruye el principio de la inocencia reconocida, transmitiendo así la idea de la ingenuidad infantil perdida al desarrollar el ego, el ser consumido por una vida en busca de distracciones, sin alma, cubierta por la máscara. Fauves considera que su estilo es el Fauvismo Neo Pop, un término nuevo en nuestro tiempo. El uso del color con mucha textura y sus ideas deconstructivas del arte crean armonía entre el caos. En referencia a sus métodos, Fauves dice que "Una vez que tengo una idea o visión de lo que quiero crear, generalmente lo dibujo primero y le doy vida a lo que está en mi cabeza. Luego llevo esto a un gran formato sobre lienzo y uso pintura acrílica, principalmente con pintura en aerosol, tinta china y, más recientemente, resina ". El próximo concepto de trabajo actual de Fauves, "NoProfile", se refiere al proceso en el cual la gente pone todo su valor en búsqueda comercial, sacrificando su yo interno, casi desprovisto de alma, convirtiéndose en un caparazón en un mundo de materialismo. En última instancia, Fauves pretende mantener un espejo para el espectador, haciéndolos darse cuenta de que esta vida no es meramente una experiencia física, sino más bien un viaje espiritual en forma de autodescubrimiento. Escazú Project tiene como objetivo capturar la naturaleza desafiante de la obra de Fauves, con la esperanza de destacar su misión en provocar la autorreflexión sobre las vidas de los propios espectadores y nuestra sociedad, a través de sus piezas intrincadas y rompedores de reglas.
