About the Artist:
Jon Blanchette, born on March 29, 1908, in Somerset, England, immigrated to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1918. He displayed artistic talent from a young age and went on to study at the Pittsburgh Art Institute. In 1932, Blanchette moved to Los Angeles with his wife, where he worked as a painter, architectural designer, interior decorator, and stage set designer for Fox Studios.
In 1948, Blanchette left commercial work behind and relocated to Aptos, California, where he focused on fine art painting and teaching privately. He also held summer workshops in Mendocino from 1965 to 1975. A romantic realist, Blanchette was primarily known for his oil paintings but also worked in pen & ink, watercolor, and silk screen.
Blanchette was a member of the Santa Cruz Art League and the Marin County Artists, and his work was exhibited in venues like the Santa Cruz Women’s Club and the Aptos Art Center. He passed away in Aptos on July 3, 1987.

Jon Blanchette
Jon Blanchette was born in Somerset, England, in 1908. He immigrated to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1918. Artistically inclined at age six, he later studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute, where he received his BA. In 1932, Blanchette moved to Los Angeles, where he painted, did the architectural design, interior decorating and stage sets for Fox Studios. In 1948, he settled in Aptos, California, where he painted fine art and taught privately. During the summers of 1965–75, Blanchette held workshops in Mendocino. A romantic realist, he was primarily an oil painter but was also proficient with pen & ink, watercolor, and silkscreen. Blanchette died in Aptos in 1987. He had a membership for the Santa Cruz Art League and Marin County Artists. Blanchette exhibited at Santa Cruz Women's Club, 1959, and stood first in the Santa Cruz County Art Competition, Aptos Art Center, 1965.

About the Artist: Frederick E. Shane (1906-1992)
A celebrated Missouri Regionalist painter and printmaker, Frederick E. Shane was known for his compelling genre scenes, landscapes, seascapes, and portraits in a variety of media, including oil, watercolor, gouache, tempera, and lithography. While fundamentally a realist, Shane often incorporated elements of abstraction, expressionism, and surrealism, adding depth and emotion to his compositions.
During the summers of 1925-26, Shane studied under Randall Davey at the Broadmoor Academy in Colorado Springs, an institution founded in 1919 by philanthropists Spencer and Julie Penrose. Shane remained closely connected to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Academy’s successor, throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, participating in Artists West of the Mississippi exhibitions and forming lasting friendships with key figures like Boardman Robinson and Adolph Dehn...
