Palacios’ latest series “Wounds,” features delicate paintings of women’s faces desperately caught between fight and flight, are gorgeously rendered using industrial, oil-based house paint on thin panels of clear vinyl, then layered over hard slabs of ruptured gray drywall. The interplay between these colorful, ethereal, seductive, and at times frightened images of women, combined with the skeletal, crumbling, pyroclastic cloud-like texture of the exposed, granular Sheetrock underneath, eventually merge to create something truly arresting, if not entirely unprecedented in the contemporary art arena. “So much of the work is about surfaces,” says Palacios, clearly fatigued by the traditional practice of creating two-dimensional images on canvas. “I try to find new ways of expressing. I want to vindicate paint, while discovering new forms of communication.”
For the artist, the process and suitably lucid message are consciously working in tandem and should continually inform one another. In viewing Palacios’ “Wounds,” one must simultaneously visualize the artist inflicting real physical violence on the drywall, which he ruptures with a hammer, his fists, feet, or other blunt objects in his Brooklyn studio. Palacios, playing the arsonist, will also frequently take a blowtorch to the drywall, rendering the rough, collapsed edges a charred golden brown, or at times an ashy, ominous charcoal gray. This damage is then reinforced with a polyester foam resin, hardening the material further. He will then return to the vinyl painting, splashing the image with paint thinner, creating wild, unbridled tears unburdened by gravity. He will also scratch and attack his painterly faces, drawn from photos of models (mostly female friends), with his nails or other sharp tools-more violence directly on the incomplete, apparitional visage. The drywall, peeking through the vinyl or “dermis,” eventually and rather impressively transforms into teeth, a trachea, a broken collarbone, a fractured skull, an exposed orbital or a damaged cornea. Is it not a decidedly masculine act, familiar to many, to put a futile fist, fueled by misappropriated anger and testosterone, through a wall or a door, leaving behind a crater; a fractal flower, a pitiable symbol of kinetic and potential violence? This process of creation and destruction, pleasure and pain, continues until both layers, sufficiently nurtured and abused, synchronize visually and emotionally, creating a permanent artifact that carries the weight of a brutal, fleeting series of events, replete with transparent trauma, too often hidden or shamefully buried in real life. –Kurt McVey

Born in Madrid in 1973, Juan Miguel Palacios begins to paint at the early age of 6 years. After a long journey with many Art Professors and Fine Art Schools, at age 12 he joined the studio of the renowned Spanish painter Amadeo Roca Gisbert (disciple of Joaquin Sorolla) for six years. Along those years, he was educated and formed in a strict academic training until he joined the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid in 1991. When he had completed his college degree, in 1997 he founded the Laocoonte Art School of Madrid. During this period, he will combine mentoring and teaching with the development of his artist career with exhibitions in different cities of Spain and countries of Europe. Works as a muralist, theater scenographer, and film posters painter will string along with him during these years. Currently, he resides in NY since 2013.
