About the Item

Erica with Pearls, 2018 Hand embellished monoprint on canvas with artist made frame 60 x 50 cm Signed, dated and annotated on verso Sophia’s Safehouse in an Uncanny Valley examines the recent celebrity culture of humanoid AI as a way to better understand humanity, authenticity, identity, and memory in the early 21st century. The installation, inspired in part by the dystopian literary works of George Orwell, Mary Shelley, Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, as well as other pulp science fiction in general is a compelling response to recent societal events and draws attention to the accelerated technological progress in the world today. As our civilization approaches singularity as defined by Ray Kurzweil, which, inevitably will guide humanity ever closer to an unabridged understanding of biology, consciousness and the universe, its the paradoxical situation of existence that intelligent lifeforms will need to come to terms with together.
