Linda Holt
"4 Koi 20" Expressionist Bright Red, White and Orange Koi in Light Filled Water

2020

About the Item

"4 Koi 20," 2020, Oil on Canvas, 24 x 24 Inches is a complex work of koi fish swimming underwater filled with light and brilliant color painted in a lush and fluid style bordering on abstraction. Fish are in shades of orange, red, yellow, and white,. The water is a rich combination of blues and greens. An extraordinary colorist with an exuberant and gestural style, this painting sparkles and Holt's expressive style is ideally suited to the flickering light, color, and movement one associates with koi swimming underwater. A companion painting, "5 Koi 2/ 20," also 24 x 24 inches, can be paired with this work to form a diptych, however each painting is sold individually. They are unframed and framing is optional as the sides are painted white. Linda Holt has been painting koi fish underwater since the 1990s and more recently small and large-scale abstractions as well. With her love of paint, process, and intense color, the abstractions are a logical evolution of Holt's more figurative work, and the 8" x 8" and 30" x 30" abstractions are also considered studies for larger works that can be commissioned in any size. Her ability to replicate such complex gestural works in a bigger scale is remarkable. Nationally recognized for many years as one of the foremost painter of koi this parallel body of abstractions are now considered on par with her figurative works and has resulted in numerous exhibitions which feature both aspects of the artist's interests. Linda Holt was raised in Philadelphia and lived in England, Alabama and Virginia before attending the Paris American High School and graduating from Skidmore College with a BS in fine art in 1970. She received an MFA in Painting from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied with Neil Welliver. Holt’s paintings have been seen in 19 one-person exhibitions, over 50 group exhibitions, and in addition to numerous private collections, works are included in many public collections including the Wichita Center for the Arts, Wellington Management, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Fidelity Investments, Mass General Hospital, and the Seaport and Reef Hotels. Selected reviews include articles in “The Boston Globe,” “Art New England,” and the “Houston Chronicle.” Holt was awarded the Nathaniel Saltonstall Purchase Prize in Drawing, has been a Trustee and Visiting Artist at Montserrat College, a Guest Critic at FIT in New York, and a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania. Linda Holt resides in Boston and has been represented by the Beth Urdang Gallery since 1995.

Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a detail of the graphically idealized stars of the American flag in gold leaf against an olive ground, "Canton Olive and Gold" is at once lovely and bold. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy while demanding serious attention, and the artist's simple natural wood double lattice frame is the perfect complement. "Canton Olive and Gold" 23 Karat Gold Leaf and Oil on Linen 30 x 42 Inches Also available are 2 very related works in this "Canton" series: "Starry Splendor" which is entirely of 23 karat gold leaf and is the same size (30 x 42 inches), and "Canton Major" which is 23 karat gold leaf and navy blue oil paint and is slightly larger (34 x 48 inches). Available as well is the "U.S. flag in Olive and Gold," a painting of the full American flag in 23 karat gold leaf and olive oil paint...
