Louise Ellen Perman
White Roses: Scottish woman artist Louise Perman floral still life paining

ca 1900

About the Item

This exquisite oil by Louise Perman (1854-1921) captures the fleeting beauty of roses with a fresh, spontaneous energy that only a true master of the genre could achieve. Unlike her more formal, heavily worked exhibition pieces, our painting possesses a dynamic, "unfinished" touch—a deliberate choice that highlights the artist’s immediate emotional response to her subject. The loose, painterly brushwork give the petals a remarkable sculptural quality, making the arrangement feel as though it was gathered and painted in a single afternoon. It is a rare glimpse into the artist's process, perfect for a collector who values the "hand of the artist" over rigid formality. Louise Ellen Perman - later Mrs. James Torrance- was a central figure in the vibrant turn-of-the-century Scottish art scene. Educated at the Glasgow School of Art (1881–1890), she became one of Scotland's most respected floral painters, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy in London. At a time when women struggled for professional recognition, Perman was a force to be reckoned with. She served as the Vice-President of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists, the first society in Scotland dedicated to the professional status of women in the arts. Her talent was recognised far beyond Scotland; in 1908, her painting White Roses was purchased by the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, a rare and significant honour for a living foreign artist. The painting is signed at the upper left and presented in a gorgeous French Louis XV style swept frame. The size of the canvas alone is 27 x 35 cm..
