Edward Shahda
The Groom

2019

About the Item

Edward Shahda was born in Hama, lives and works in Damascus. His subjects are inspired by folk tales, myths, and local icons with a focus on the female body. His work is characterized by simplified expression with color spaces and touches, sometimes surrounded by symbolic elements. The exhibition at Khawam Gallery in West Palm Beach and Miami in 2021 carried a new experience for the artist, who witnessed the diversity of the topics of his works away from a single theme, with the privacy of each work and his preservation at the same time on the way of thinking and visual formulation in blending engineering spaces and rich and varied artistic symbols in their intellectual meanings and relying on details from life and ancient myths and religious icons. Concerning the exhibition, the artist Shahda said in a statement to SANA TV, “Drama is essential in my painting. Without it, the painting becomes decorative. I paint my various daily observations on the street, including people, places, and life details. I am affected by what I read as well. Everything that occurs in thought and sight can be formed on the surface of the painting.” On the extent of his dependence on the culture of the viewer in understanding and deconstructing his visual symbols, Shahda explained that he presents his artistic ideas and visions to leave the recipient the freedom to understand these works, considering that the culture of viewing requires long and cumulative work from everyone to advance the culture towards a broader horizon.

  • The waitress. Three quarter portrait. Contemporary Cubist style. Oil paint
    Located in Segovia, ES
The waitress. Oil on canvas, three quarter portrait of a beautiful waitress. Cubist style Measurements in centimeters: 122 x 48 x 2 cm / Framed: 152 x 78 x 4 cm. In Inches: 48.03 x 18.9 x 0.79 " Framed: 59.84 x 30.71 x 1.57 " Original three-quarter close-up of the surprised model at work, with the carefree and seductive air of young and happy waitresses at work. The painting is harmonious in its rich shades of blue, white, grey and violet, combined with muted, earthy tones and tints of ocher flesh. The flattened perspectives, the fractured surfaces and the graphic stylizations refer to the cubism of Picasso and Juan Gris. There are echoes of Modigliani in the treatment of his female models and we can detect an homage to Gauguin and Matisse, in his playful and sensual manipulation of color.
