Oliver Hazard Benson
Love Knot - Archaic Irish Manuscript Inspired Erotic Artwork of Entwined Figures

2017

About the Item

Painting Description: This painting began as an adaptation of a sketch I made after figures in an old Irish manuscript- probably The Book of Kells or Lindisfarne Gospels. I tried to add light, shadow and detail without violating the simplicity and weird strength of the traditional form. Seeing as the picture is only partly my invention I should be cautious about explaining it’s meaning, but it has come to mean something to me. It evokes the challenges and rewards of intimacy- knowing an other, knowing one’s self. Oliver Hazard Benson Love Knot acrylic on panel 14h x 14w in 35.56h x 35.56w cm Bio: I was born into a family which valued artistic and craftsmanly work, so from a young age I developed an interest in drawing. A strong sense of history and culture was important too- my family was old- though not wealthy. I was clever, so I was able to attend private schools under scholarship. When I was 19 I decided to become an artist. I enrolled in The Pennsylvania Academy but left after a semester- I had my own vision and a strong sense of how to work. I took as my teachers the masters of earlier times and different places- China, Tibet, India and of course Europe. I lived in poverty and isolation but was happy because drawing and painting gave me so much pleasure. After almost thirty years of painting I still love doing it. Generally my work is produced directly from imagination and deals with a mixture of things I have seen in my travels, witnessed in dreams and read about in literature.
