About

Painting Description: This painting depicts a scheme borrowing heavily from European occultism. It is meant to be experienced without too much analysis but a few ideas might assist the viewer. At the bottom right of the painting is a “green door” through which the viewer may enter the waters which are the setting of the scene. Here we see the occult “Holy Family”. Osiris and Isis as lovers joined and their son, the winged Horus accompanying. Isis has eyes in her many palms- these represent deeds of motherly compassion. Osiris has an eye over his heart to show that organ’s perfection in him. Horus seems to be holding a cross or a ship’s mast. This could be seen as the child’s crucifixion of his parents but also his making (of their union) a sail for his boat. Note that Horus sits on a heart with an eye. The boat in question would of course be the Barque of Ra that carries the sun (or the soul) through the underworld. At the bottom, or at the prow of the boat is Set. He is the watcher who will protect the boat on it’s passage. In occult terms, he is the magician- the “I” by whose effort the divine work of the gods may come to pass. On his left shoulder is the emblem of Horus. On his right is a unicorn man with a stigmata. This is the Christ (Horus in another form). Note that the unicorn man has a double flanked by another set of twins. Bio: I was born into a family which valued artistic and craftsmanly work, so from a young age I developed an interest in drawing. A strong sense of history and culture was important too- my family was old- though not wealthy. I was clever, so I was able to attend private schools under scholarship. When I was 19 I decided to become an artist. I enrolled in The Pennsylvania Academy but left after a semester- I had my own vision and a strong sense of how to work. I took as my teachers the masters of earlier times and different places- China, Tibet, India and of course Europe. I lived in poverty and isolation but was happy because drawing and painting gave me so much pleasure. After almost thirty years of painting I still love doing it. Generally my work is produced directly from imagination and deals with a mixture of things I have seen in my travels, witnessed in dreams and read about in literature.
