Figurative Expressionist portrait and scene of a travellers gypsy caravan. The painting is signed bottom right, Fayo (?) but further research is necessary for an attribution. Presented in a fine chip carved Montparnasse frame. Provenance: from a Private French collection, South of France. A strong and powerful scene, part portrait part scene of a travellers life. Both characters seem to be in quiet contemplation aware of each other but not looking. The artist has created a mood to the painting featuring simple lines with an almost monumental quality and muted colour harmonies. The work is very reminiscent of the paintings of Ramiro Arrue and the scenes of his beloved Basque country. Ramiro Arrue was born in Bilbao, into an artistic family: his three older brothers, Alberto, Ricardo, and José, were also artists and frequently held joint exhibitions with him. He also had two sisters. Their father, Lucas Arrue, was an art collector who sold his collections (including a Goya) to pay for the artistic training of his sons. At the age of nineteen, Ramiro travelled to Paris to take courses at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Living in Montparnasse, he became an associate of his countrymen Ignacio Zuloaga and Paco Durrio, as well as the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, who became a close friend. He was also associated with Picasso, Modigliani, and Jean Cocteau. In 1911, Arrue exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1922, along with his friends Philip Veyrin and Commandant William Boissel, he founded the Musée Basque at Bayonne. In 1925 Arrue won a gold medal at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs. He exhibited in Bayonne, Pau, Strasbourg, Bilbao, and Cordoba. Along with his brother José, he travelled and exhibited in South America, to Buenos Aires and Montevideo. He often, however, returned to the Basque Country, particularly to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, where he settled in 1917 and where he found his main inspiration for landscapes, portraits, and everyday scenes. Mid 20th century oil on canvas of a crowded harbour scene, showing the local fisherman or sailors saying farewell to their families before going to sea. The painting is signed bottom right but the artist remains as yet unidentified. A colourful yet slightly brooding and dreamlike painting. The figures are faceless and the shapes loose and undefined reminiscent of the works by Balthus who in turn was influenced by LS Lowry and his scenes of industrial districts. The colours are deep and glowing and the shapes of the figures are rounded giving a sense of warmth and evoking the quality of light seen at either dawn or dusk. Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (February 29, 1908 – February 18, 2001), known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist. He is known for his erotically charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men".

Large surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W, signed and dated bottom left and signed and titled 'She brought Colour into his Life' to the reverse. This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer. Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow , Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.) Thence by descent to the present owner. Exhibited: - Hotel de Boer, Medan 1954, where acquired by the first owner. The light I observed everywhere was of a special quality, fluorescent blue, shone from nowhere but radiated from every point, oddly with great depth and intensity. The light in an entirely different dimension came from nowhere and went nowhere shimmering with the glow of a bright blue jewel. The most important thing I discovered was of being omnipresent and able to understand everything at the same time, yes I could fathom creation completely. Auke Sonnega, born March 9, 1910 in Leeuwarden, known as the painter, primarily of young Balinese men and women. Originally raised in the reformed denomination, the parents of Auke apparently practised theosophy and their children, including Auke were taught these principles. The talent for drawing revealed itself at an early stage which in 1926 lead to a 4-year study of textile design at the Academy for Art and Craft in Amsterdam. He completed the academy in 1930 and worked in a carpet factory in Twente until 1934 and then followed in his sister Aafje’s footsteps leaving the Netherlands to go to the Dutch East Indies where in 1935 he started working as a graphic designer with an advertising bureau in Batavia. He was able to travel through Java and Bali on the motorbike that he brought with him from Europe, and was paid for his travelogue, enhanced with his own photo’s which appeared in several Dutch newspapers and magazines. Oil on canvas by Edith Desternes (1901-2000), France, 1920s. The Church Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Auvers-sur-Oise. This church has been painted in 1890 by Vincent van Gogh. At first glance, one is struck by the strength of this work. Then, on examination, one is captivated by this depth of soul and technique. Edith Desternes uses a thick paint here where black, and dark colors, play a privileged role. Thus the contrast between the warm and cold tones, surrounded by black, create an intense luminosity reminiscent of stained glass windows from the Middle Ages.
