Portrait of a Gentleman in Riding Dress by Paul Knight (exh. 1883–1904) oil on canvas, framed (*read important notes at the end of this listing) Signed lower right Approximately 83 × 45 inches framed: 102 x 64 inches approx Provenance: private collection, England *please read important notes below re: shipping and the frame. Portrait of a gentleman, full length standing, wearing a sage green jacket with a teal striped waistcoat, long black boots and smoking a cigarette. Condition: The painting is in very sound and original condition. It is currently having a clean and very minor areas of restoration. The frame is original to the painting and has some plaster and gilt loss; this too is being currently restored. The painting will be sold fully restored and ready to enjoy. An exceptional and imposing full-length portrait by Paul Knight, depicting a distinguished and elegant young gentleman. The sitter wears a sage green jacket over a rich teal striped waistcoat, with tan breeches and long black riding boots. Holding a cigarette casually in one hand, he is portrayed with a relaxed confidence that gives the painting considerable character and presence. The monumental scale is particularly impressive, standing approximately 102 inches high, making this a superb statement portrait for a large country house or traditional interior such as a hotel, bar, restaurant, country club or even a shop (ideal for Ralph Lauren inspired interiors). Works of this nature are very rare and painted on this monumental scale very seldom come to the open market; usually remaining in their original country houses from generation to generation.
