About the Item
Massey’s extraordinary technical proficiency heightens the unusual combination of imagery in his work. His style combines elements of low brow, irreverent postmodernism, pop and absurdist.
Massey unexpectedly groups pop culture characters – past and present – from film, animation and fine art, Betty Boop, John Travolta and Jeff Koons in the work Susan with Popcorn Premiums for example.
His work is appreciated and included in the collections of entertainment notables as well as British royalty.
Born in 1938, Massey was orphaned as a youngster and subsequently lived in the city-run orphan facility. At 18, he graduated from the Wilbur Wright Vocational School and then joined the U.S. Navy. During his tour of duty, he completed correspondence courses; his depth of studies plus technical proficiency led to a dedicated career as a fine artist, with intermittent work in commercial art. He has exhibited nationally since 1961.
