About the Item

Title: Virgin Mary and Child Jesus Artist: Ramón Aguilar Moré (Barcelona, 1924 – 2015) Date: 1950 Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 55 x 46 cm (21.7 x 18.1 in) Signature: Signed in the lower left corner: R. Aguiló-Mons, dated “50” Condition: Good. Original canvas on period stretcher, unframed. Stable surface with a patina consistent with its age. Provenance: Private collection Description of the Work The painting depicts a classic scene from Christian tradition: the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. The composition is structured with frontal simplicity, emphasizing the serene and compassionate face of Mary, wrapped in a dark mantle that contrasts with the deep red of her tunic. The Child, with a rounded face and upward gaze, is enveloped in light tones, creating a chromatic balance with the surrounding elements. Both figures bear golden halos — symbols of sanctity — rendered in a modern language that evokes both Byzantine iconography and the expressionist movements of the mid-20th century. The black line outlining the forms recalls Gauguin’s cloisonné technique and the graphic style of Georges Rouault, reinforcing the symbolic nature of the scene. The greenish background, treated with heavy impastos and material nuances, provides depth without detracting from the central focus: the sacred maternal intimacy. The style of this piece reflects an early stage in Aguilar Moré’s career, where elements of Post-Impressionism, Expressionism, and a contained spirituality coexist — all characteristic of the Spanish post-war context. Biography of the Artist: Ramón Aguilar Moré (1924–2015) Ramón Aguilar Moré was a Barcelona-born painter with a long and versatile career, active from the mid-20th century until his death. He began his artistic journey in exile in France during the Spanish Civil War and, upon returning, briefly studied at the Royal Academy of Sant Jordi before continuing as a self-taught artist in the workshop of Oleguer Junyent. In 1951, he traveled to Paris, where he came into contact with the French avant-garde and consolidated a style deeply influenced by Cubism, Expressionism, and the vibrant Mediterranean palette. A versatile artist, he was known for his portraits, jazz scenes, ballet, and urban life depictions, as well as his ability to approach religious spirituality with a modern sensibility. Aguilar Moré held over 150 solo exhibitions throughout his life, both in Spain and internationally. His works are included in major public and private collections, such as MACBA, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Madrid, the BBVA Foundation, and the Reina Sofía Museum in Athens. Comparable Artists This early-period work by Aguilar Moré shows stylistic affinities with: Georges Rouault – for the expressive use of black contours and religious themes with symbolic depth. Marc Chagall – for the intimate spirituality and emotional use of color. Jordi Curós and early Josep Guinovart – in their blending of modern formal elements with traditional themes. Pere Pruna – for the balance between classicism and Catalan modernism.

Woman praying oil on canvas painting
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Frame size 70x61 cm. José Muntané Balaguer (1889 - 1963) Immerse yourself in the spiritual beauty of "Woman Praying," a sublime work by the acclaimed Spanish artist José Muntané Balaguer. This oil on canvas captures the serenity and introspection of faith, showcasing a masterful use of light and shadow reminiscent of great masters such as Joaquín Sorolla, Ignacio Zuloaga, and even the emotional restraint of Diego Velázquez in his most intimate portraits. The painting depicts the purity of a devotional moment, where the female figure seems to transcend the canvas, inviting the viewer to reflect on spirituality and human connection. The meticulous attention to detail and subtlety in expressions place Muntané Balaguer in the tradition of artists who immortalized scenes of everyday life with unique sensitivity, much like Julio Romero de Torres...
