Ron Hicks
"Thirsty"

About the Item

Ron Hick on Thirsty: "Thirsty" slips into the identity side of how I see things. This is taking my experiences and emotions as a victim of racial profiling and putting them in a box, leaving them there and looking for the connection between my emotion the work. She [Thirsty] is the face of public perception. Part of what I am doing is playing down shapes and finding harmony and expressing myself emotionally through texture. Some paintings, this one is an example, start abstractly and move to have more figurative aspects as it is being worked. In my quest I have realized that I am not just transferring information, I realized there is an emotional dialogue with the viewer, which is why I have difficulty responding to the question, "What is the meaning of your work?" because I see myself as the person who is initiating a dialogue rather than dictating it. I started doing studies of combining disciplines and have them work in a cohesive way with one another; I have been in the space where my work was the traditional and figurative way of seeing art. Now I have started looking at color and texture, which I couldn’t attach to earlier because I was so interested in making things look pretty. Looking at color and texture allowed me to start to see things abstractly. I can now have my figurative view and pull in the abstract.
