About the Item
In BLACK FACE, Samuel Dunson creates an epic portrait which cuts across time, combining three generations of his family onto a handsewn canvas of repurposed fabric to speak about the beauty of growing up black. Interested by the phenomenon of black actors having to wear blackface during minstrel shows, he paints a portrait combining the unique facial features of his family: his father’s gapped teeth, his son’s prominent brow, his own large forehead. This pieced-together face is surrounded by the oft-maligned, jive-speaking crows from Dumbo, who Dunson repurposes to represent key figures in African American history (Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass, MLK). Through his combination and repetition of these sets of threes, he can portray the black experience iconographically, imbuing it with a metaphysical importance.
