These petite oil paintings feature sections of the body rendered in expressively naturalistic detail. I am synthesizing descriptive mark-making and awkward composition to transform the figure into a strong, yet fragmented subject. Using scumbling and glazing techniques, I have merged the forms of the subject with the physicality of the painted surface. The result is paintings that are small pieces of myself which allow for an intimate connection to the viewer. My intent is the create a lush, visceral painting that people can connect to, and perhaps, feel themselves in. This wood panel is gallery depth, wired, and has white edges.
About the Artist
Shaina’s figurative work spans the range from realism to abstraction, a dichotomy which she finds to be an ongoing inner conflict within her work. “It’s a search for balance and subtlety,” she says. Shaina is also captivated by the relationship between the beautiful and the grotesque, as seen in her varying presentations of the female form. She works from her own source imagery in a process that includes underpainting, layers of paint, and glazing. When she’s not painting, Shaina also makes tiles and pottery for a local ceramics shop.
