Sorin Bica
"Imagine", Abstract Expressionist, Red, Yellow, White, Blue, Oil Painting

2014

About the Item

Sorin Bica's "Imagine" is a 50 x 38 inch oil painting on canvas. It's an expressive, abstract painting of a seated figure rendered in bold, almost glowing blocks of color. The person appears hunched forward in a contemplative pose, with their head bent low and their body folded inward, giving the whole composition a quiet, introspective mood. Thick outlines and simplified shapes define the figure, while the colors seem to pulse against one another: vivid reds, warm yellows, creamy whites, and deep blues dominate the scene. The hands are carefully suggested rather than realistically detailed, which adds to the painting’s dreamlike quality. The head is especially striking rounded and luminous, with a bright yellow, white center edged by red and orange tones, almost like a halo of thought or inner heat. The background is split into energetic fields of color, cool blue on the left, fiery red on the right, and a strong red plane beneath the figure. These contrasting areas intensify the sense of tension and solitude. The painting feels both raw and intimate, as if it is not trying to depict the figure literally, but instead to capture a state of mind, quiet, inward, and emotionally charged. The painting has a simple 1/4 inch wood frame. It is wired and ready to hang. The signature is on both front and back of the painting. Sorin Bica is a contemporary artist based in the Boston and Framingham areas, frequently sought for his unique large-scale abstract and figurative paintings, as well as public and private murals. The use of intense color and expressive figures can be seen through-out his work. Sorin was born in Bucharest, Romania where he studied at Scoala Populara de Arta as a child. He began his career drawing political cartoons in his native country, designing clothes and espadrilles, custom jewelry and mixed media art. He moved to the USA in 1988 and minored in art at Worcester State University. He continued to combine the cartoonish drawings with his painting, which resulted in his present style. Bica's work can be found in many public, private and corporate collections both in the United States and abroad. He is a resident artist at SOWA artist Studios in Boston and The Mill Contemporary Art in Framingham, MA. Bica States, "I paint because I must. I see movement, relations, color, contrast, texture, light, in almost everything. I am fascinated by people, the complexity and beauty of life. I am amazed by the multitude of reactions and relationships that we generate, about the happiness and sorrow that we experience.
