2017

About the Item

The realist acrylic on board miniature painting, "Beyond the Overpass," 2017, is an intimate travelogue panel by midwestern artist, Steven Paddack. Anyone who has been on a road trip knows these iconic structures that we see from our periphery but rarely admire in any depth. By isolating these quirky forms against rural sky, Paddack is able to transform the pedestrian into the captivating. Often seen near small rural towns, they function as markers along the route, marking time, distance, and location. Observing these structures has become away to play with the notion of travel, of journeys. They represent anywhere and nowhere, so quotidian as to be easily ignored; yet upon close inspection they reveal an almost alien presence. STEVEN PADDACK creates miniature visual diaries, or travelogues, of the rural, Midwestern environment. His sightings of commercial water towers - generic, sculptural forms known to almost all U.S. travelers - inspired a new series of paintings that are included in this show. The globular forms take on an uncanny, alien quality with a celestial mystery. A Midwestern artist, Paddack resides in Indianapolis, Indiana.
