About the Item
A remarkable 18th-century Cuzco School painting of Saint Isidore (c.1070-1130), a Spanish agricultural labourer venerated as the patron saint of farmers and of Madrid. He was canonised in 1622, and his cult spread rapidly throughout the Spanish colonies. The scene is rich with iconographic elements, including the saint's elaborately embroidered courtly dress and livestock (a black bull and horses), referencing his life as a farm worker. A colonial church appears in the background, whilst attendants, angels and fellow labourers surround Saint Isidore in his wide-brimmed hat. The composition features flat, decorative patterning with intricate floral motifs and dot-work throughout, with Saint Isidore dominating the scene. The work is well presented in a dark wooden frame with gilt accents. Unsigned. On canvas laid to panel. Image size: 50 x 45.5cm.
