- Japan Japanese Garden by French naive outsider folk art primitive artist, 1975Located in Norwich, GBA perfect painting for lovers of Japan and those of primitive/naive outside art. It is a work by an internatoanlly noted extraordinary artist with an extraordinary life. Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15. Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins. Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night. He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art. Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years. He marries Kazué SHIMOTORI, a Japanese poet...Category

- The Woman on the Beach: coastal scene by friend of Degas: gray green blue oceanLocated in Norwich, GBA wonderful and evocative coastal landscape with a lone female figure on the beach. Depicted is undoubtably a Northern shore - the sea is a brownish green rather than azure blue - but the luminosity of the sky is marvellous, and one can almost smell the salty air. It is a work by French master Paul Robert (1857-1925) who had studied in the studios of Leon Bonnat and Henner, and later with Guillaumet and Stevens. He had hence received rigorous academic training, and exhibited at the Salon from 1874 onwards. Here however is an an intimate, personal and early Impressionist work by Robert, who had become close to Edgar Degas. Dated août (August) 1883, it was certainly painted on the motif, in plein air. To give you a timeline, the first Impressionist exhibition had only been held nine years earlier! The canvas measures 41 x 24 cm. It was conserved by Parisian master restore Renato Vassallo Paleologo in 1980, and is presented in a hand carved and gilded frame by RG - quite possibly the best framers in the world. The business was started in the late 19th century by Emile Gault, and by the mid 1930s, Picasso...Category

- Dance of the NymphsBy Paul Desire TrouillebertLocated in New Orleans, LAThis lyrical landscape entitled Dance of the Nymphs was composed by the French Barbizon painter Paul Désiré Trouillebert. A joyful scene of nymphs dancing the morning fog, the work closely resembles an important work by the great Camille Corot, which is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay (Paris). Renowned for his unique individuality that toed the line between the traditional and modern, Corot and his landscapes helped pave the way for an entire generation of Impressionists who followed him. Trouillebert perfectly captures the poetic atmosphere of Corot’s groundbreaking works, while also imbuing this scene with a freshness and character that is all his own. Trouillebert's oil on canvas is exemplary of the tradition of historical painting. The work perfectly combines a realistic depiction of the natural world with a spirited romanticism as his idealized nymph figures frolic playfully beneath a crisp morning sky. As a whole, it is a lovely composition executed with a level of skill and artistry that proves Trouillebert's exceptional talent in the arts. Born in Paris in 1831, Paul Désiré Trouillebert was a student of the academic painters Ernest Hébert...Category
