About the Item

Francesco Tironi (Venice, about 1745 - 1797) attributable to The Grand Canal with the Rialto bridge, the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi and the Fabbriche Vecchie oil painting on canvas - cm. 72 x 94 - with frame cm. 83 x 111 The proposed painting is to be placed in the production of the great Venetian landscape painter Francesco Tironi (Venice, 1745-1797) and can be dated around 1780, constituting a remarkable demonstration of the artist's expressive skills in the mature phase of his activity. It is a suggestive view of Venice, with a glimpse of the Grand Canal and the Rialto bridge seen from the north. In the front part of the composition it is possible to admire the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi and the Fabbriche Vecchie, while on the other bank, to the left of the frame, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi. In the eighteenth century Venice experienced a second "golden age" in the artistic and cultural fields. The Venetian view became a very successful pictorial genre, to satisfy the needs of patrician families, nobles, especially English and Germans, but also French, who visited the city during their "Voyage d'Italie" (Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples), and of those who, although they had never been to Venice, intended to decorate their residences with views of the Serenissima. Alongside Antonio Canal 'il Canaletto' (1697-1768), the spearhead of landscape painting, a large number of artists, active in the lagoon city, made this pictorial season extraordinary. Among these must be remembered Luca Carvelarijs, the Guardi, Francesco and his son Giacomo, Vincenzo Chilone and precisely Francesco Tironi, to whom the proposed painting must be compared. Tironi is characterized by a rather eclectic taste, which blends elements taken from Canaletto or Marieschi in an original way (for the typology of the 'macchiette' and the compositional layout of the views), with clear Guardesche influences (for the synthetic rendering of the architectural elements , defined fluently). In our painting the author's attention is concentrated on the rendering of the architecture, with the buildings described with warm pigments and soft chiaroscuro landscapes, delicately outlined against a bright sky, animated by gray-pearl clouds (where the large hooked cloud stands out, typically referable to Tironi). A characteristic of our author is the way of highlighting the chromatic arabesque of the buildings, using a palette of harmonious shades, making them rich in the expression of the texture, innervated with a delicate beauty. The artist adopts a traditional perspective cut that favors the open glance with an accentuation typical of a Marieschi landscape painting; it is certain, however, that the general approach derives from the etchings of Canaletto and Visentini: the first had dealt with this view in paintings executed between the fourth and sixth decade of the eighteenth century, while the work of the second is an engraving, always with the same glimpse, entitled 'Pons Rivoalti ad Occidentem, cum Aedibus Publicis utrique Lateri adjectis' (see details). The view, in excellent conservation conditions, is intact and without significant restorations, not recently relined, and enriched by a beautiful gilded frame.
