About

Giovanni Battista Venanzi da Pesaro (Pesaro, 1627 - 1705), attributable Portrait of Solomon, the Wise King Oil painting on canvas cm. 104 x 65 within octagonal frame in lacquered and gilded wood cm. 130 x 91 The beautiful painting shows us an image of the famous King Solomon, a legendary biblical figure who over the centuries became the personification of the good ruler, and proverbially recognized as one of the wisest politicians in history. The stylistic features lead us to place the canvas in that magnificent expressiveness of the lively classicist clearly central-Italian painting of the seventeenth century, in which the simultaneous presence of numerous and heterogeneous figurative cultures favored the formation of an authentic crossroads of Italian art. We can therefore identify Renian ancestry and, to a greater extent, stylistic features that betray direct contact with the Bolognese figurative culture of the seventeenth century: it is these characteristics of the work that show us that we are in the presence of a painting executed by a talented artist active in the Marche and in Emilia during the full seventeenth century; Entering now into the specifics, we are inclined to approach the paternity of the painter Giovanni Battista Venanzi (Pesaro, 1627-1705), born in Pesaro, a pupil in Bologna of the evoked Guido Reni, Simone Cantarini and then of Benedetto Gennari. The painter was able to use a stylistic vocabulary rich in both Corresque and late Mannerist reminiscences, combined with the aforementioned Bolognese experiences, which certainly contributed to determining his success. The qualitatively highest period is identified around 1670, coinciding with his transfer to Parma, and therefore with the appointment as court painter of Ranuccio II Farnese in 1678. Subsequently, on his return to Pesaro around 1690, Venanzi became a protagonist of the local scene, grabbing important commissions. Accompanied by a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law (FIMA). We take care and organize the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers. For any information, do not hesitate to contact us.
