About the Item

French Mid Century Cubist oil on board of a still life with guitar by Gilberte Schmit. Signed bottom right, presented in plain wood frame. A suberb Cubist composition from the period when Juan Gris, Picasso and their contemporaries were exploring similar subjects and ways of seeing and painting the world. Wonderful use of colour and line all the elements are there, a little jewel. Gilberte Schmit was a Member of the National Society of Fine Arts, She was a painter and interior decorator of some renown. Born in 1907 in Bordeaux and died in 2001 in Tournan en Brie. She Graduated from the National School of Decorative Arts. Member of the National Society of Fine Arts, the Salon of French Artists, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon of Women Painters and Sculptors, she appears in the annual exhibitions of this group where her works are well received by critics. Gilberte Schmit held the Prix de l'Institut, the Prix Cottet, the Grand Prix of the Académie des Hespérides and the General Council of Seine et Marne. Schmitt's paintings were widely exhibited in Paris, in the provinces and abroad. Her paintings were purchased for the collections of the city of Paris, the French State, the former President of the Republic Valéry Giscard D'Estaing and the King of Saudi Arabia, Ibn Saud, in the early 1950s. She was a pioneer in architecture and interior design. After the war, 'well-being' at home was one of the essential concerns of the French, comfort was fashionable. Her marriage to René Schmitt, cabinetmaker and manufacturer, allowed Gilberte to exercise her art in design and decoration. From a simple piece of furniture, Gilberte's talent turns it into a work of art, she thus becomes 'La fee des salons”. In her studio in Montparnasse, she became friends with Delplanque, Chochon, Toulet, Van Hasselt, Toffoli… For years, Gilberte furnished and decorated with unparalleled taste and know-how.
