John Maddison
Corner of the Sitting Room - House Interior Still Life Oil on Board Painting

2015

About the Item

A beautiful oil on board depicting a corner of the artist's sitting room with paintings on the walls by John Maddison. Signed with initials lower right and further signed and dated 2015 on the reverse. Exhibited at The Jerram Gallery, Sherborne. Artist: John Maddison (Scottish, born 1952) Title: Corner of the Sitting Room Medium: Oil on board Size: 23.5 x 27.5 inches (60 x 70 cm) including frame Provenance: The Jerram Gallery, Sherborne Born in St. Andrews, Fife, John Maddison studied Art History at the University of Manchester and, following graduation in 1974, went on to lecture on Medieval Art at the University of Leeds. He has been described as a painter "capable of investing the ordinary table-top still-life with magic and mystery". (John Russell Taylor, "The Times"). "The handling of paint stood out" (Richard Dorment, "The Telegraph" reviewing the R.A. Summer Exhibition). The Daily Telegraph Magazine published a four page illustrated article on him in which he discussed his approach to painting. John paints the interiors of his home by electric light. His pictures glow with earth colours shot though with occasional dashes of blue. He is preoccupied with the shapes and patterns made by accidental conjunctions of bookshelves, pictures, chair backs and objects on a mantelpiece, as well as by half-open doors. John Maddison learnt much of enduring value about the art of painting from the artist Dick Lee, and since 1992 has concentrated full time on painting. He paints in oil, interpreting the texture and colour of everyday objects with a handling that gives the paint a feeling of fluidity, and recalls the manner of William Nicholson. In 1995 he was commissioned by The National Trust to paint a series of panels for a restaurant at Felbrigg Hall. In 2008 he was commissioned to design the new altar for the Lady Chapel in Ely Cathedral. For this commission John was one of five artists short listed for the coveted 2015 ACE Awards. These awards are designed to celebrate the successes and diversity of architectural and artistic projects in religious buildings throughout Britain.

  • Table with blue Tablecloth on Summerday- 21st Century Contemporary Painting
    By Keimpe van der Kooi
    Located in Nuenen, Noord Brabant
This Painting is made by Dutch Artist Keimpe van der Kooi. He likes to paint still-lifes in colorful ambiance. In his paintings there always will be cloths, bowls, flowers and a beautiful sunlight. As an artist, he already made a name for himself in various ways. He participated and won 'Stars on the canvas', is now a teacher at the Classical Academy where he teaches third-year students everything about color. He has many successful exhibitions behind his name and his work has been sold all over the world. Keimpe also publishes a lot about art and artists in magazines such as Atelier and Palet. The beautiful place where Keimpe has his studio since two years is located in Drenthe. At the edge of forests and fields, Keimpe can retire and concentrate on his still lifes, portraits, landscapes and gardens. The latter subject, garden and landscape, can also be seen during the exhibition 'Rhythm, stillness and movement'. Come on 'is the work where Keimpe painted his own garden. An inviting path almost literally enters the garden. Tuinen made his tutor Matthijs Röling, gardens also made Keimpe van der Kooi himself. We see similarities but also many differences. We see the beautiful colors that we know from Keimpe's still lifes in his garden. Purple, yellow and red flowers grow along the garden path of Keimpe, the colors and details disappear to the back so that you have the feeling to look into the depth. Magnificent. Keimpe also painted a sandy path in Drenthe for this exhibition. In the summer light the green colors get a warm glow. The coil with the shadow also ensures that you can walk down the path, the depth in the work is enormous. As a result, you do not hang a flat painting on the wall, but you get space! The other paintings by Keimpe are still lifes. Ginger pots...
