Isaac de Moucheron (Amsterdam 1667 - 1744), attributable Pair of paintings a) Garden of an Italian villa with a path lined with trees and fountains b) Staircase of a villa with underlying rose garden and Italian gardens Oil on canvas applied to wood - 59 x 55 cm. - In an frame 71 x 67 cm. Provenance: Hampel Monaco December 20, 2020, as Isaak van Oosten (1613 Antwerpen - 1661, zoug.) We are pleased to present this harmonious counterpart of compositions, set in the sumptuous Italian gardens of a stately building, enriched by fountains with water features and flower beds, and dotted with different groups of figures that animate the avenues; there are those who walk romantically, those who take care of flower arrangements, or those who relax listening to music in the shade of large trees. The work, although it is certainly the fruit of the author's imagination, probably takes up a place that really existed, drawing inspiration from one of the many gardens that enriched the large villas located on the hills near Rome. The two works, in our opinion, would have originally been part of a larger cycle, commissioned by the owners of the villa to enrich the rooms. An idealized vision of court life is offered, characterized by a pleasant atmosphere of serenity, lightheartedness and idyll. In the first work, a couple descends the stairs of the castle, while two ladies in armchairs are surrounded by a festive company, while gazing at an immense Baroque garden with artfully arranged flower beds, fountains and sculptures. In the second we see a couple of gentlemen, probably the owners, who rejoice in the long tree-lined avenue of the park with the notes of a lute player near a gushing fountain, while a servant comes out of a walled gate with a tray. Thanks to the stylistic characteristics of the works, unquestionably adhering to the Roman / Flemish culture of the seventeenth century, we are inclined to approach the hand of one of the Nordic painters who came to study in the Eternal City. In particular, departing from the previous attribution that saw them made by Isaak van Oosten (Antwerp 1613 - 1661), we find instead perfect iconographic and stylistic correspondences with the catalog of the Flemish Isaac de Moucheron (Amsterdam 1667 - 1744) during his stay in Rome. Here the painter certainly had the opportunity to study the famous series of prints made by Giovanni Battista Falda (1643-1678), which show the most beautiful gardens both in the great residences of the center and in the country houses of the noble families. De Moucheron became very passionate about this subject, and even after his return to Amsterdam, having collected a large series of graphic models, he became a reference for the great bourgeois families who asked him to portray the gardens of their residences. As in our painting, his compositions were enlivened by characters of evident Flemish inspiration. STATE OF PRESERVATION: The paintings are in excellent condition. The work, like all our objects, is sold with a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law.
