A Classic, dramatic, historic yachting scene by New Zealand's leading marine artist showing John Nicholas Brown's Sparkman & Stephens-designed 72' yacht "Bolero" setting the course record for the Newport to Bermuda Race off St. David's Light, Bermuda in 1956. Thirty-five years ago there were only a handful of professional artists pursuing marine art full time. Today, as a result of a renewed surge of international interest in this enduring art form, there are now literally thousands of artists around the world who are devoting their considerable talents to keeping this traditional art form alive and flourishing. In the maritime nation of New Zealand foremost among these is Anthony Blake. Hailing from a celebrated maritime family – his brother was internationally renowned sailor Sir Peter Blake – Tony’s dazzling yacht racing scenes first appeared in the American market fifteen years ago. They were an instant success. Since then, he’s grown to become recognized as one of the world’s leading marine artists. When the New York Yacht Club wanted to commission an artist to commemorate their 150th anniversary with a painting of the Club’s first regatta, they chose A.D. Blake. The Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, England selected one of Tony’s paintings to be included in the official program of the historic America’s Cup Jubilee Regatta held there in 2001. Three of his paintings were included in the 1999/2000 America’s Cup program in Auckland, New Zealand. The newest edition of the definitive book on America’s premier family of yacht designers Herreshoff of Bristol features one of Blake’s paintings on the cover. He’s also been commissioned by both the Herreshoff Maritime Museum and the Storm Trysail Club to produce paintings for their collections in addition to completing many commissions for private collectors. His work is featured alongside other prominent marine artists in Yachts on Canvas by James Taylor, assistant curator of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. A trained engineer, competitive racer and designer of boats himself, Blake is able to depict both the drama and the intricacies of yacht racing with an accuracy and vibrancy that is stunning. His subjects range from classic yachts and contemporary races to complex harbor scenes. But it’s his understanding of the play of light and shadow on the sea and on vessels moving through the water together with an energetic use of oil paint that combine to give his paintings a distinctive look that is instantly recognizable to sailors and marine art connoisseurs alike. When not painting, he serves as Chairman of the New Zealand Classic Yacht Association and skippers the 1894, 57 ft. gaff rigged yacht Waitang, racing her with a crew of 12-15.
