Adolphe Louis Castex-Degrange
Water Lilies on Lake, Castex-Dégrange, 19th Century French Romantic Flowers

c.1880

About

A beautifully brushed painting depicting waterlilies on a lake, with delicate wildflowers in the shadow of overhanging trees on the water's edge by French painter Adolphe-Louis Castex-Dégrange. The piece is signed lower left and dates circa 1880. Framed dimensions are 14 inches high by 19 inches wide. Adolphe Louis Castex-Dégrange was anxious to embark on a military career but was sent instead to the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons in 1853, where he studied under Vibert, Reignier and later L. Guy. He was enrolled initially in the engraving section but he opted to study floral design in order to become a textile designer. Castex-Dégrange exhibited at the Lyons Salon, and at the Paris Salon as of 1870. He moved to Paris in 1876 where he worked as a decorative artist and, for a three-year period, as a ceramicist. He returned to Lyons in 1884 as a successor to Reignier as professor of drawing and composition of floral textile design. In addition to his flower compositions, Castex-Dégrange painted genre compositions, among them Greed; At the Office; Dessert; Last Spoonful; Battle; Before the Market; June; Garden Shed; Market Scene; Bride, and decorative compositions, notably for Lyons Town Hall and the Rhône Prefecture. He also produced landscapes and caricatures. That said, he is remembered first and foremost for his still-lifes of flowers, to which he brought a new decorative style, a vigorous touch, and rich and luminous colours that were ideally suited to the silk-producing industry, which was then at its peak. Museum and Gallery Holdings: Lyons (MBA): Greed; At the Office; Dessert; Last Spoonful; Battle; Before the Market; June; Garden Shed; Modelling Table Provenance: Private Lyon collection
