Adriano Baracchini Caputi
The Coal Pit

1911

About the Item

Artist: Adriano Baracchini Caputi Title: The Coal Pit Medium: oil on canvas Signature: Signed and dated lower right “A. Baracchini Caputi 1911”. Notes: Inscribed on the back “La carbonaia”. Exhibitions: 1912, London (with the title Burning the rubbish) The divided touch of Adriano Baracchini Caputi (Florence, 1883 – Livorno, 1968) is of a completely different substance. A Tuscan painter, he belonged to that generation of post-Macchiaioli painters, later active in the Gruppo Labronico, who were introduced to the Divisionist language by Vittore Grubicy in Milan and taken by him to the Salon des peintres divisionnistes italiens in Paris in 1907. If the starting point was the rustic poetics of macchia painting, the final point was a Divisionism enriched with Symbolist overtones. In Baracchini Caputi’s Coal Pit, painted in 1911, the real datum is transfigured into an almost dreamlike vision, in which the filamentous ductus of certain portions is combined with more minute touches, particularly in the definition of the sky and the trees. The expressive and at times powdery style of the view with its fiery colours is directly inspired by certain works by Plinio Nomellini (Livorno, 1866 – Florence, 1943).

  • Marmore Falls
    Located in Roma, RM
signed and dated lower right 'A. Calcagnadoro 1902'. In this majestic view of the Marmore Falls (Umbria), dated 1902, Calcagnadoro exhibits a naturalism full of symbolic evocations, in which the water element is the protagonist of the view. The place, visited by many artists and writers during the grand tour of Italy, is perfectly rendered in its wild and bursting dimension. Son of art (his father Cesare Calcagnadoro was an appreciated decorator), the artist from Rieti worked for a long time in the field of decorative art, achieving his most important successes with monumental paintings for architectural environments (Rieti, Sala Consiliare; Ligurian Pavilion at the Ethnographic Exhibition of 1911; Salone dei Ministri in the Palace of the Ministry of Education). The fame he achieved through this type of activity led him to obtain first a chair at the "Scuola preparatoria alle arti ornamentali" (preparatory school for the ornamental arts) of the municipality of Rome, then at the Institute of Fine Arts, where he was in close contact with Adolfo De Carolis. In parallel with his work as a decorator, Calcagnadoro devoted himself with enthusiasm and greater creative freedom to easel painting, constantly presenting the results of his research at national exhibitions. After his initial attempts to explore the themes of antiquity, in the early years of the 20th century the painter turned to the 'humanitarian socialism' of Duilio Cambellotti, Giacomo Balla, Giovanni Prini and Domenico Baccarini. His socially themed works convinced critics and institutions alike, as evidenced by the gold medal he was awarded for his painting The Unemployed, a dramatic painting of denunciation exhibited at the Florence Promotrice in 1904. Perhaps in deliberate opposition to the rhetorical language of architectural friezes...

Painted in the style of pointillism, a series of tiny painted brushstrokes , this 44x44 oil landscape features tilled fields in vivid orange and yellow colors. In the distance is green fields and a cloud filled sky. About the artist: Born July 18, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, H.M. Saffer II launched his career by exhibiting his art at a public art show at the tender age of six. Upon graduation from Temple University in 1965, he traveled to Paris, France to enroll in graduate economics courses. Concurrently, HM's path took a different twist, as he soon leveraged his musical talent performing with notable French stars Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, and many others. He was later hired by Barclay Records as a producer, and had several hit records in 1968 and 1969. During this period, he was also the chef / owner of two restaurants in Paris, and later a third located in Ibiza, Spain. Remarkably, as engaged as he was, HM never stopped painting and exhibiting his works. Several of his shows - sponsored by his restaurants and music associates - "sold out" and were favorably written up by the press. Before returning to the United States in 1970, he completed selected studies at L'Ecole Des Beaux Arts and exhibited in Paris and Brussels, Belgium. HM continued on with his music career in the United States at Warner Brothers Productions where he co-wrote the international hit song, "Look What They Done To My Song, Ma", recorded by Ray Charles, Melanie and other performers. While at Warner he painted a forty foot mural in their Madison Ave., NY headquarters and exhibited his works in the firm's lobby. In 1972 HM was hired by the dynamic songwriter/producer Bob Crewe as Senior Vice President for the Crewe Group of companies where he worked with the industry's top names including Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Vicki Carr, and Oliver. Later that year, he established HMS Two Music Ltd. and spent his time writing and producing music for films, commercials, recordings and Broadway productions.
