About

In Drowned Forest, 2014, a group of gray, gnarly tree stumps, some hosting green plants living within them, are in the midst of silver water spanning the entire picture plane. In the watery surface we see reflected the stumps, a partly cloudy impressionist sky, and the far shore with a group of peach-colored flowering and green trees. The colors are reminiscent of works from the Italian Renaissance, but their application in the sky and leaves brings to mind Georges Seurat. Alan Bray paints landscape scenes in his native Maine using casein tempera paint on wood panel. Bray is fascinated by man-made structures in the wilderness disintegrating as the land is reclaimed by nature. His paintings have a sense of the adventure from his childhood explorations of the woods. Bray's style also includes the meditative maturity of the Italian Renaissance masters whom the artist studied as a young adult. Bray imbues both a strangeness and a sense of place to his landscapes, with rhythmic craggy, bent or curved natural objects painted as though from a dream state. "The way his uncanny narratives lean away from the rational," writes art critic Daniel Kany, "Bray is like the Edward Gorey of Maine landscape painting." Alan Bray received his MFA in painting from the Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Arts, Florence. He has had seven solo exhibitions in New York and his work is in collections including the Arnot Art Museum, Farnsworth Museum of Art, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Lyman Allyn Museum of Art, and the Portland Museum of Art.
