Alfred Eduard Agenor de Bylandt
Twilight River Landscape, Signed 1856 Oil on Canvas, 109 x 78 cm

1856

About the Item

Twilight landscape with a river and mountains, signed and dated A. de Bylandt 1856, oil on canvas. The present painting depicts a tranquil river landscape in late afternoon or early twilight. The scene is possibly from Switzerland. A gently flowing river occupies the centre of the composition, its reflective surface leading the eye into the distance. Large rocks emerge from the shallow water in the foreground, while dense vegetation and mature trees frame the river on both sides. Beyond the trees, a softly rendered mountain rises through the hazy afternoon light. The distant landscape is deliberately subdued, with the warm yellow and ochre tones of the sky merging into the pale green and blue-grey tones of the mountain and surrounding vegetation. The painting is characteristic of the romantic landscape tradition of the mid-nineteenth century, with particular emphasis on atmosphere, light and the transition between foreground detail and a softened distant landscape. The strongly worked rocks, foliage and riverbank contrast with the almost mist-like treatment of the mountain and sky. The warm, subdued palette and the quiet evening setting give the composition a contemplative character. Alfred Eduard Agenor de Bylandt (1829 – 1890) was a Belgian born painter of noble Dutch family background who spent much of his later life in the Netherlands. De Bylandt was principally a landscape and animal painter, working within the romantic tradition of nineteenth-century European landscape painting. He lived and worked in Brussels until 1874, with temporary periods in London in 1852 and Utrecht in 1856, before moving to Arnhem and subsequently The Hague. His travels were important to his artistic production. His known subjects include landscapes in Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands, as well as views of the Mediterranean and North Africa. Among the subjects recorded in exhibition catalogues are landscapes in Switzerland, views of Sorrento, the Lake of Geneva, rivers, winter landscapes and pastoral scenes. De Bylandt exhibited during the later part of his career in Ghent (1874), The Hague (1875, 1878 and 1881), Rotterdam (1876), Amsterdam (1877 and 1880), and Groningen (1877). His exhibited subjects included, Swiss landscapes, Sorrento, river scenes, Lake Geneva, winter landscapes and classical ruins.
