About the Item

ENRIQUE MARTÍNEZ CUBELLS Y RUIZ Spanish, 1874 - 1947 PREPARING FOR FISHING signed "E. M - CUBELLS. RUIZ" (lower right) oil on canvas laid on panel 11-1/4 X 15-1/4 inches (28.6 X 38.8 cm.) framed: 18-1/2 X 22-1/4 inches (47 X 56.5 cm.) Enrique Martinez Cubells was born in Madrid in 1874 and died in Malaga in 1947. He was the son and grandson of Valencian artists, began his studies in the workshop of his father Salvador, portraitist and author of historical subjects. There, he became acquainted with the artistic activity and continued his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid. A painter with a solid background, he specialized in building issues, related to the sea and fishing, especially since 1910. His contact with the Valencian painting that came to him through his admired Joaquín Sorolla, led him from the year 1910, to show in his painting, a better lighting approach. He participated in numerous exhibitions and exhibitions. In the "National Exhibitions of Fine Arts" he won 3rd Medal in 1897, 2nd in 1899 and 1st in the editions of 1904 and 1912. He was awarded 3rd Medal in the International Exhibition of Buenos Aires in 1910 and Grand Prize in the International Exhibition of Panama in 1916. She was an academic at the Royal Academy of Buenos Aires and San Fernando de Madrid, and held numerous dotinciones and decorations. "PREPARING FOR FISHING" It is a work where the lighting stroke of the Valencian school is present. The living water of the port, illuminated by the powerful sun of the day, contrasts with the darkest areas of the boats and shadows they cast. The balanced game between lights and shadows is one of the attractions of this work. Fishermen are also light points created based on a touch of color, which gives them life and movement. The very balanced composition is very well resolved, in this beautiful and harmonious painting. Is work is represented in the Carmen Thyssen Museum of Málaga with different canvases, such as Pescadores dragging the boat (no date), The return of fishing (1911), a work similar to that belonging to the Prado Museum, La Puerta del Sol, Madrid 1902, work that was also sent by the artist to the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, and Breton Woman (1899-1900), who possibly painted during one of his trips to France, representing a scene of interior manners, where we see a woman sitting almost in darkness inside a house. In 2003 the Ibercaja Exhibition and Congress Center in Zaragoza dedicated an important monographic exhibition.
