Anna Ortiz
"EL BORRADOR", MesoAmerican, Mexico, myth, gods, forests, Aztec, Mayan, dream

2021

About the Item

EL BORRADOR, an oil painting on canvas by Anna Ortiz, measures 28" high x 32" wide. El Borrador is recent work and characteristic of the artist's practice – the palette is restrained, the colors are harmonious and surreal – with muted olive tones, greys and taupe throughout, rendering the grove and the fallen trees in a distinctive light. The branches, leaves, vines and stone in Anna Ortiz' paintings – superbly applied – bring a lush intrigue to the time we spend in this place, this invented world. From Anna Ortiz – "Inspired by the archeology of Mesoamerican figures and the landscape of Mexico, the creatures in my paintings come to life in dream-like landscapes where they are neither dead nor alive. Their narrative nature references ancient Aztec and Mayan mythology. Out of the ruins of a previous existence, these new gods embrace their ambiguity. Dualities define them and give them shape. Weaving together invented spaces with references to actual locations, the paintings take both a familiar tone and a sense of the uncanny." Anna Ortiz (born in Worcester MA, currently living in Brooklyn NY) is a painter primarily focused on creating socio-psychological landscapes. Her work reflects on global issues through painterly collapses and constructions. Ortiz received a BA/BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. During her undergraduate years, she spent a year studying at the Louvre in Paris. Ortiz completed her MFA at Tyler School of Art, spending her second year in Rome Italy. Her work has been exhibited at Proto Gomez, Transmitter, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Partners and Son and Lesley Heller, New York.

  • "Outskirts", acrylic painting, duality, nature, humanity, chaos, dream, myth
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Outskirts" is an acrylic painting with collage elements on canvas, measuring 38" high by 44" wide. There's nowhere to hide in any of William's paintings, that's part of the charge coming off his canvases. That's particularly true with this painting – we immediately see that everything is wrong, hands coming out of trees, a human head on a horse or dog. Yes it's Mythic but even there it's wrong, the legs are impossibly crossed. In fact little of this painting can be true and yet here it is. Out of control, left over and residual ways and means of living life. Who or what are we now? Press Release 2018: "Williams acknowledges a large range of influences on his vision: the moral lessons embodied in the works of 17th century engraver Jacques Lagniet, the darkling phantasms and tragic reportage of Goya’s Caprichos...

  • "Falling Figure", acrylic painting, red devil, dream, myth, poetry, flight
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Falling Figure" is an acrylic painting on canvas measuring 16" high by 16" wide. The title may be somewhat disingenuous – falling figure indeed – with cloven hoofs, red skin and horns on head suggesting a demon's fall from grace. The demon? Mythic and humanitarian all at once, the figure appears to be wearing stylish shorts and gives the thumbs up sign on the way down. Perhaps an all too familiar predicament as we tumble toward our own destinies... Press Release 2018: "Williams acknowledges a large range of influences on his vision: the moral lessons embodied in the works of 17th century engraver Jacques Lagniet, the darkling phantasms and tragic reportage of Goya’s Caprichos and Disasters of War, and the personal mythologizing of the late paintings of Philip Guston. Such works echo throughout Williams social surrealist re-visioning." – George Del Barrio, Vanderbilt Republic, Brooklyn NY Dale Williams has exhibited in the New York City area for the past 25 years. He is a 2014 recipient of a Fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts from the New York Foundation for the Arts. His most recent one-person show, “America Now Suite,” which re-visioned American history in service of the civic imagination, was held at Gowanus Loft, Brooklyn in October 2018. A selection of portraits from “America Now Suite” was included in the BRIC Biennial, Winter/Spring 2019. His portrait of Osip Mandelstam...

Blue Statue, 2020 "For Blackburn, the Western’s heroic drama, good-versus-evil narrative, and assertive landscape are challenges to face in her work. These aspects of film can overwhelm a painting, thus distancing the viewer from the art. She wants the art to be dominant; “Painting wins,” she declares. She finds this happens when a painting possesses what she terms “classical balance.” By this the artist means that everything is where it needs to be compositionally—nothing can be changed—and “the whole can be seen at once.” Linda Blackburn...

  • Oltremare 6
    Located in Milano, MI
I am not afraid to define it as a metaphysical painting, - says Angelo Crespi - and right in the suffix "beyond" (in Greek "meta") also of the title "Oltremare" the intent to climb over the wall of the sensible and the real is revealed. There is another vein to which the new paintings of Nahmad refer and it is that of Romanticism, in the strong idea that art should represent the sublime, not the beautiful. The skies like John Constable, thick with purplish blue clouds (such as "Rainstorm over the Sea" of 1828 which anticipates by a century modernity), the stormy seas like William Turner, give the viewer the idea of infinity and vastness of nature compared to the finitude and misery of the human. If Caspar Friedrich...
