Armand Avril
La Mer à Cassis, Expressionist Oil on Paper, Late 20th Century

1970's

About the Item

Late 20th century oil on paper view of the Mediterranean sea at the port of Cassis in the south of France by French artist Armand Avril. The painting is initial signed bottom right and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. It is presented in a fine moulded wood gilt frame with a cloth insert. This vibrant artwork bursts with energetic colour and movement, capturing a dynamic scene interpreted through an abstract expressionist lens. The artist employs thick, sweeping strokes of blue, purple, and orange to convey a nocturnal landscape of a bustling harbour. Bold, circular dabs of yellow mimic the glow of lights or a celestial display, while vertical and diagonal lines suggest reflections on water. The painting's rhythm and texture evoke a lively, almost chaotic atmosphere, emphasizing motion and emotion over precise form. The piece’s abstract nature invites viewers to immerse themselves in its vivid interplay of hues and forms, discovering new interpretations. Its exuberance and intensity mark it as a compelling example of modern, expressive art, challenging conventional representations through a blend of colour and movement that captivates and intrigues. Cassis was a popular and inspirational theme for Avril as were the paintings of Raoul Dufy and this is very evident in the composition and handling of this painting. Armand Avril was an important French artist, whose distinctive style was influenced by French, African and Inuit traditions. Avril's works until the late 1960's are characterised by a figurative style of painting, with sensual shapes and outrageously bold colours. Later he created mixed-media artworks, and the influence of Braque, Picasso and Matisse is especially visible in his compositions. Avril was accorded major retrospectives of his works and his paintings and assemblages are represented in major museums and collections worldwide.
