About the Item

Signed lower right 'B. Eisenstadt' and painted circa 1955. A substantial view of a rustic garden showing two women relaxing with martinis on a sun-dappled wooden deck. A painter, teacher, illustrator and cartoonist, Benjamin Eisenstat exhibited widely and with success over a 50 year career, including at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design. Eisenstat was a recipient of numerous national medals, prizes and juried awards including the Annual Medal of Achievement by the Philadelphia Watercolor Club (1962), the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art's Harrison Morris prize and fellowship three times and the Springfield, Missouri Museum's Watercolor USA prize (1972). Eisenstat studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, the Albert Barnes Foundation, the Philadelphia Graphic Sketch Club and Fleisher Art Memorial. Eisenstat later would become an associate professor for painting and drawing at the Philadelphia College of Arts from 1949-1969 before becoming a professor at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society and served on the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, the Philadelphia Art Alliance (1962-1968), the Artists Equity (1967-1971) and at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts (1955-1960). Eisenstat has work in numerous public collections, including the Fleisher Art Memorial, Springfield Art Museum, the Philadelphia Woodmere Gallery and Jefferson Hospital. Commissions include an official painting of the U.S.S. Savannah and historical murals among others.
