About the Item

The French painter Charles Camoin captured the legendary Moulin Rouge in this bold oil on canvas. An artist associated with the Fauves, Camoin primarily worked in the south of France, where he produced brightly hued landscapes and still life scenes. This work, by contrast, offers an exceptionally rare urban view of one of the most famous landmarks in Paris, the Moulin Rouge. Boldly painted with confident black lines and swatches of vivid color, the work reveals the artist's expressionist tendencies, while bringing to life the liveliness of Montmartre. Another rare view of Moulin Rouge by Camoin can be found in the collection of the Musée du Petit Palais (Geneva). Camoin was born in Marseille in 1879, the son of a paint manufacture. Upon moving to Paris in 1896, he was admitted to the École des Beaux Arts under the instruction of Gustave Moreau; it was during this period when he met the young Henri Matisse. Their friendship would last a lifetime, and their creative bond would inform Camoin’s oeuvre throughout his entire career. Inevitably, Camoin became an integral part of the group of painters that formed around Matisse, including Henri Manguin, Georges Rouault, André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck. This group of daring, audacious young artists would form the original group of Fauves. Following his early successes, Camoin entered a period of depression that had a significant effect on his artistic output. During a particularly bad bout, he destroyed nearly eighty works in his studio in 1913. That same year, Camoin traveled with Matisse to Morocco, and it was on this trip that he would rediscover his love for painting. In 1920, Camoin married Charlotte “Lola” Prost, and the couple lived out their lives between Paris and Saint-Tropez, where Camoin continued creating his compositions until his death in 1965. Today, his works are found in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, among others.
