Claude Thomas Stanfield Moore
Victorian Marine Oil Painting Busy Sunset Shipping Scene, boats in golden light

19th century

About the Item

Victorian Marine Oil Painting - small busy shipping scene at Sunset. Stanfield Moore's work is both rare and sought after, it achieves a very high premium if it comes to auction because of this. There is no denying the quality of his work, as this little gem attests to! He was a wonderful observer of both the seas and the crafts which sailed on them. He is most likened to JMW Turner, again which this painting certainly nods to. Beautiful small oil painting on canvas, mounted on stretchers of a busy shipping scene, with both steam and sail. It is bathed in golden light and is highly typical of the work of this very fine artist. Claude Thomas Stanfield Moore (1853 - 1901) - Shipping at Sunset Oil on Canvas, Signed and Framed in handmade gold frame. This is a total gem of a painting, small but absolutely perfect in its execution and atmosphere by an artist at the top of his game. By 1891, Claude T. S. had declared himself a Marine artist; his pictures are predominantly river scenes or coastal scenes with vessels drawn in intimate detail, always with dramatic lighting effects. Claude had a studio in Nottingham but worked mainly in London from 1882 and painted many London scenes, some of the most prominent being his views of the Thames, its wharves, ships; and his views of The Houses of Parliament and Westminster, from the river. One painting, called The Pool of London, which was created jointly by Claude and his father in 1879, sold at auction in 1999 for £12,000. Claude was said to have been influenced by the Nottingham painters Henry Dawson and J. M. W. Turner due to the use of light in his paintings, although it has been said that his paintings of the Thames give the impression that "the Thames is in the tropics". Sadly Claude T. S. died in 1901, at the age of only 47, shortly after his father.

Pieter Cornelis Dommersen was born Pieter Cornelis Dommershuizen or Dommerhershuisen on 6 December, 1833 in Utrecht, Holland. Little is known about his father and he appears to have been brought up solely by his mother Cornelia into an artistic family. His younger brother was the artist Cornelis Christian...

The Woodcutter
By Alfred East
Located in London, GB
Alfred East The Wood Cutter Oil on board Signed lower right and titled on back Image size: 10 1/4 x 15 inches (26 x 37.5 cm) Carved gilt frame This romantic landscape by East, certainly shows the influence that the Barbizon school had on his work. The Barbizon school were drawn together by their passion and desire to elevate landscape painting as a response to the Academic elevation of historical and mythological themes. Here, East truly revels in the beauty of the English landscape but also captures the mood of the time in which there was a growing concern at the rapidity of social change and its impact upon the countryside. East regularly painted the Cotswolds from the early 1890s until the end of his life - it is probable that this scenes depicts that part of the country. He focused principally on the area around Upper Swell, which he referred to as 'Over Swell', hoping to avoid the village becoming a focus for visitors seeking out the views that he portrayed. East adopted a well established three-stage-technique that made great use of the under-painting, a second layer concerned with the correction of values, and a final stage for the addition of details; all painted with lean oil paint. As can be seen in the work, during this process East practically repainted the entire canvas after the first layer and then proceeded to pick out isolated sections that required further reworking and detail. Provenance Pelter Sands Gallery Bristol, 1975 Exhibition of Twentieth Century British Painting. This work was part of Andrew Vicari...
