About the Item

Work : Original Unique Work. Handmade artwork. Ready to Hang. Medium : Oil and Acrylic painting on Canvas. Artist : Deniz Bayav Subject : Reflet (Title / FR) In “Reflet”, contemporary artist Deniz Bayav explores the delicate balance between opposites and transformation, a recurring theme throughout her artistic practice. This composition captures fallen autumn leaves immersed in water, where light and shadow, life and decay, and presence and disappearance coexist in quiet harmony. Bayav’s work reflects her ongoing exploration of contrasts — both visual and conceptual. Through nuanced layers of color and texture, she reveals the tension between organic and inorganic, fresh and withered, existence and nonexistence. The reflective surface of the water becomes a metaphor for time and impermanence, echoing the artist’s fascination with the cyclical nature of life. Influenced by Nietzsche’s philosophy of the “Eternal Return”, Bayav contemplates the endless rhythm of destruction and rebirth. Her imagery recalls the traditions of vanitas and memento mori, yet reinterpreted with a contemporary sensitivity that merges realism and abstraction. “Reflet” is both a meditation on transformation and a celebration of contrast — where decay gives rise to renewal, and shadow reveals the depth of light. Through her poetic use of form and reflection, Deniz Bayav invites the viewer to perceive the subtle beauty within the inevitable cycles of existence. Signature : The work is signed and dated verso. Size : H 27.55 X W 19.68 inches - H 70 x W 50 cm and 2cm depth. ___ To learn more about this work, please contact us via the 1stdibs messaging system. Deniz Bayav was born in 1980 in Merzifon, Turkey. She lives and works in France. After finishing her licence at the University of Marmara (Istanbul) in the Fine Arts Education/Painting Department, she pursued her Master and PhD studies in the same university while working more specifically on painting and printmaking. She is a professor at Trakya University Painting Department in Edirne. She has been teaching painting, printmaking and drawing at this university since 2006. During the 2018-2019 academic year she worked as a “visiting professor” at Paris 8 University Department of Visual Arts in France. She is working as a “visiting professor” at the Higher School of Art Dunkerque-Tourcoing in the 2023-2024 academic year. _____ I have been working on the notion of opposition both in my paintings and engravings. When we have a look at my different series from the past to the present, this opposition is sometimes achieved through obvious contrasts of the different values of the colors, sometimes with light-dark areas, sometimes by distinct texture contrasts or opposing concepts: Existence and nonexistence, birth and death, organic and inorganic, fresh and faded… Leaves, feathers, eggs, bitten apples and rotting fruits always carry marks that point to the beginning and the end. Thus, it establishes links with “vanitas” and “memento mori” in art history. In my daily life, in my nature walks, I always search for effects, objects and organisms that remind me of this opposition and cycle and I transfer some of them to my works. This cycle and “eternal return” are treated in Thus Spoke Zarathustra as follows: “Everything goes, everything comes back; the wheel of being rolls eternally. Everything dies, everything blossoms again, the year of being runs eternally.”

Photorealism is a genre of art that encompasses painting, drawing and other graphic media. An American art movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Photorealism evolved from Pop Art as a counter to Abstract Expressionism as well as Minimalist art movements. Though Photorealists share some aspects of American realists, such as Edward Hopper, they tried to set themselves as much apart from traditional realists as they did Abstract Expressionists. Photorealists were much more influenced by the work of Pop artists and were reacting against Abstract Expressionism. The word Photorealism was coined by Louis K. Meisel in 1969 and appeared in print for the first time in 1970 in a Whitney Museum catalogue for the show "Twenty-two Realists." It is also sometimes labeled as Super-Realism, New Realism, Sharp Focus Realism...
