Gorgeous early 20th Century impressionist landscape of New York in late summer by Dorothy McVey Cother (American, 1898-1971), 1924. This beautiful landscape illustrates classical American impressionism style characterized by open airy composition, short, dabbling brush strokes in foreground with defused washed out colors in background all resulting in a satisfyingly layered visual experience. Signed lower left cover and on verso. Dated and titled on verso. Condition: Very Good; professionally cleaned and new UV-resistant varnish. Presented in beautiful period "pie crust" frame of burnished bronze tone with green patina. Image size: 24"H x 24"W. Framed size: 28"H x 28"W. Dorothy McVey Cother was an fine arts instructor at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York and member of the New York Water Color Club, American Water Color Society, National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. It was reported that, "The watercolors by Dorothy Cother are worthy of special notice on account of their strong and brilliant color quality." She participated in many exhibits around New York including the annual exhibition by members of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation at the Art Center of New York.

Illustrated in "New Hope for American Art" Harry Leith-Ross (1886 - 1973) The son of an English father and a Dutch mother, Harry Leith-Ross was born in the British Colony of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean a thousand miles off the southeast coast of Africa. His first formal art instruction began in England under Stanhope Forbes, followed by studies with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian in Paris. Leith-Ross came to the United States to enroll at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1910, and then to Woodstock, in 1913. It was in Woodstock at the Art Students League, under the tutelage of Birge Harrison and John F. Carlson, that Leith-Ross would receive the training that most influenced his career as an artist. There he formed a lifelong friendship with fellow artist, John Folinsbee.
