About the Item

18th Century Stag Hunt with Huntsmen, Hounds and Riders in a Woodland Landscape English School, 18th century unsigned Oil on canvas, framed Framed: 13 x 39 inches Canvas: 11 x 36 inches Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Condition: Overall very good condition. A finely composed sporting scene depicting a stag hunt unfolding across an expansive landscape, painted in a similar taste to that of Peter Tillemans, one of the foremost sporting and topographical painters working in England during the early 18th century. The composition combines wooded foregrounds, mounted huntsmen, hounds and distant figures pursuing their quarry across rolling countryside. The panoramic format lends the work a particularly decorative quality, allowing the narrative of the hunt to unfold across the full breadth of the canvas. Rich woodland tones contrast with the open landscape beyond, creating depth and atmosphere whilst capturing the excitement and pageantry associated with the traditional English hunt. The painting has been lined and restored by Aitken, Dott & Son in March 1940, as recorded by an ink stamp to the reverse. Works inspired by Peter Tillemans remain highly sought after by collectors of sporting, equestrian and country house paintings, reflecting the enduring popularity of Britain's hunting traditions.
