19th Century

About the Item

King George III in Windsor Forest with Horsemen, Hounds and Deer English School, 19th century, after the painting by James Pollard (1792-1867) Oil on canvas, framed in antique gilt frame. Framed: 40 x 52 inches Canvas: 30 x 42 inches Provenance: Private collection, England; remnants of old Christies auction label Condition: very good condition. A highly decorative sporting scene depicting a royal hunt in Windsor Forest, with mounted horsemen, hounds and deer set within an expansive wooded landscape. Rich in movement and narrative, the composition captures the excitement and pageantry of the traditional English hunt, with riders galloping across open parkland whilst hounds pursue their quarry beneath towering ancient trees. The painting is based upon the celebrated earlier composition by renowned sporting artist James Pollard (1792–1867), as indicated by the plaque mounted to the frame. The work beautifully evokes the grandeur of royal sporting life and the enduring traditions associated with Windsor Great Park during the Georgian period. Of further interest, the reverse retains an old handwritten label identifying the subject as "George III Hunting in Windsor Forest" and referencing James Pollard, together with additional historic ownership or collection notes. Although now partially worn and difficult to decipher in full, the surviving inscription provides valuable evidence of the painting's longstanding identification and provenance history. Such historic labels and annotations are highly desirable, offering insight into the work's passage through previous collections and adding to its period character. We cannot see a signature on the painting, so presumably is unsigned. Particularly appealing are the numerous figures, horses and hounds distributed throughout the composition, creating a lively and engaging scene. The artist has balanced the energetic foreground action with a sweeping landscape beyond, where distant architecture and rolling countryside add depth and atmosphere. The substantial scale of the painting, combined with its rich colours and impressive gilt frame, gives the work excellent wall presence. A classic English sporting picture, ideal for a country house, library, hunting lodge or equestrian collection. For any further information please do contact us with any questions you may have.
